listen=daniel johnston

yuk. My nose is sore and the my garbage is filled to the rim with kleenexes. Bright side: turntable is fixed (or so i thought) so I put it back in my room. this morning's spins included a side of songs in the key of life and yip/jump music by Daniel Johnston.

"True love will find you in the end
You'll find out just who was your friend
Don't be sad, I know you will,
But dont give up until
True love will find you in the end.
This is a promise with a catch
Only if you're looking can it find you
‘Cause true love is searching too
But how can it recognize you
Unless you step out into the light?"

I love Daniel. I have gotten to the point with his music that his songs carry additional meaning: a special feel and memories. Memories often pervade my listening experience because I let them--it is much more fulfilling to listen than to hear. Daniel Johnston's songs are pure in the sense of being unadulterated by production and its 'listenability'. There is much less to get caught up in--it is almost impossible to hear and not listen.

A few years ago, I purchased 'the late great daniel johnston'. One disc is entitled 'discovered covered' and includes covers of johnston's songs by the likes of bright eyes, beck, and tv on the radio. It is really a great homage to johnston's works and any fan should check it out.

This is what you get:

Lately I have been paying a lot more attention to rap music. After years of ignoring, for the most part, most 'mainstream' rap in effort to stay 'alternative' or whatever, I have broken out into the forbidden top 40.

Well, sort of. While 808s & Heartbreak and Tha Carter III did make my Christmas list, I still spend the majority of my time with hip hop on the hype machine looking for zany remixes. When I read (on pitchfork, of course) that a certain Minty Fresh Beats had mashed Jay-Z & Radiohead songs into a 10-song album (titled, ahem, Jaydiohead), I had to give it a listen. If you're into this type of thing, it is definitely worth checking out. Nothing incredible, but interesting nonetheless to hear 'in step' cut up to a 5/4 + 3/4 to work with .

Jaydiohead is available for free download y'all.

This fall I got the chance to see Zach Hill (drummer for Hella) play at the High Noon. He set up his drum kit and played through 'Necromancer', the anchor of his latest solo release, Astrological Straits. It was an incredible display of power, dexterity, and, most impressively, stamina. For those who haven't heard Hella, here is a must:

'Biblical Violence' live.

The most impressive aspect of Hella is that it sounds cohesive and they make real songs. Zach Hill and Spencer Seim are also incredibly prolific-when I went to see Zach play the merch table was stocked with 20+ different cds of Hella and numerous side projects.

A free download from every Hella album is available at their website.

I'm not very familiar with the blogspot site yet. Can I make blogspot friends with other bloggrs? Bloggers add me.

A Stare Like Yours is primarily a music blog. Hey, why not. I dig the musics. I figure writing a blog is like getting a 1 hour long weekly radio show on college radio, but much more convenient.
